Another thing to keep in mind when choosing a coffee table is the cost. Think about your habits and how you use your table. Do you like to sit on the sofa with your legs up on the table? Then you will need a square ottoman style table. You need space for storing magazines or other such pieces? You need a table with several drawers or shelves or you can go for one looking like a bottom drawer. Your living room is the meeting place of friends? You need a large table so you can fit lots glasses or cups on it. You want a big meal, but not always have enough space? Choose a "nest" of tables, meaning three tables of different sizes that can be used separately, but can be tidied away beneath one and other.
Regardless of what your personality really is, or who you want to project, spending some time considering the 'presentation' of your coffee table, just as you would a display on a buffet or dresser could make a huge difference to your room. If you want to create a coffee table display, select pieces with a similar theme and group them together, then balance the display with an off centre vase of flowers, or bowl. If you prefer to keep your coffee table surface clear, look for a coffee table design that makes more of a statement, to add interest to the centre of the room, if you have a minimalist theme, create depth by contrasting shapes, a simple round vase on a square table for example.
You don't want to purchase a coffee table only to realize when you get it home that you don't have space for it because it's too big or that you have too much space because it's too small. Decide on the design too. If you want something simple then go for simplicity in design. If you want something grand try something with intricate designs. If you want to use your unique coffee table to serve guests then consider a lift top or something equally functional.
Similarly square coffee tables are excellent in larger rooms although they can overpower smaller spaces when not chosen with care. If you are buying a square coffee table be sure to mark out the floor area that will be covered to make sure that it will not overwhelm the room. Many people with small children prefer a round coffee table as they consider the lack of sharp corners a safer option and less likely to cause accidents. Round tables can be difficult to fit into smaller rooms and can take up more floor space than other shapes. They can be very social however and are a good choice if you regularly sit around playing cards or board games.
